INSIDE: The history of braids is deeply intertwined with the creativity of enslaved Africans. Africans who used this art to communicate, resist, and survive the transatlantic slave trade. Despite the erasing of culture, language, and identities, Africans continued to braid their hair, weaving with stories of our ancestors, their homelands, and maps to freedom. Braids became a secret language, a symbol of unity, hope, and dedication. Braids remain a powerful symbol of black identity, culture, beauty, and reminders of those who have come before.
Knotless braids
Knotless braids have been popular for a while, they first caught the eye when Janet Jackson wore them in the classic movie “Poetic justice” however they have been around for much longer.

Cornrows
Cornrows have been around since 3000 b.c and have been popular in Africa for centuries. They gained popularity in the US in the 60’s and 70’s thanks to Stevie Wonder and James brown.

Soft locs/ faux locs
Soft locs have become very popular in 2023. They are a popular protective style because they do not take as long as other styles and can be worn for weeks at a time.

Island twist/passion twist
Passion twists have been popular since 2018. Passion twists are a popular protective style for hair because they are water- friendly , can be worn in various lengths and styles, and promote hair
growth.

Fulani braids
Fulani braids have been popular since 2018 when they were worn by celebrities like Alicia Keys and Solange Knowles. It’s a style you wear in many different ways. They start with cornrows in the front and end with Knotless braids (or Box Braids) in the back.
