Popular artist Tyler, The Creator recently surprised his fans with the release of his eighth studio album “Chromakopia”. Within just days of release, the album garnered massive success amongst new and old Tyler fans, but not without some ridicule.
After listening to the album in full, I have some judgments of my own. To start off, I felt the album was a nice listen and had some really hard hitting songs such as “Like Him” and “Sticky”.
That being said, some of the songs included in the album were less than perfect. “Darling I” had a great beat and good vocals but was simply too long and repetitive. For “I killed you”, the ad libs were straight up annoying and overall, I found the song was lackluster and offered little to nothing to the album.
The album sometimes dilutes its beautiful and honest messaging with crude humor, as well as tarnishing the listening experience near the end of the album which contains the more heart-felt songs in the album. Aside from this, however, songs like “Like Him (featuring Lola Young)” in which Tyler offers a sorrowing glimpse of his anger and sadness regarding his father’s absence in his life make this album a masterpiece .
Not every song has to be serious to be good. “Sticky”, for example, is an absolute banger, yet it’s almost entirely just references to sex. Sticky also shows that the explicit jokes in the album can be funny, but can be simultaneously annoying at times and as I mentioned before, hurtful to the more serious undertones of some of the songs. It all really depends on your sense of humor.
In my final opinion, I think at best this album deserves a 7/10. It had some of the most energetic songs I’ve ever heard from Tyler, The Creator, but its flaws are too apparent and detrimental to the album for me to give it a higher score.
