Advancement Via Individual Determination, more commonly referred to as AVID, is a class designed for academically motivated students aspiring to pursue future career goals. Through the course curriculum, students are educated on skills needed to achieve college and career success with the process of tutoring, additional guidance, and peer involvement.
Hayfield Secondary Schools AVID site team is hosting the annual AVID Career Day, an event being held at Hayfield Secondary School on April 25th from 9:30-11:00 AM for students in grades 9-12. AVID teacher, Cristina Cherniawski explains in detail the central focus of this event.
“I recruit people like spouses, friends, people I know, other staff members are related to [and] I get as many of them as I can. They rotate around the room in small groups and meet different people and talk to them about how they got to their career and obstacles they’ve overcome [while] learning about their industry,” Cherniawski said.
All students will also have the opportunity to speak with adults about college and career choices and the potential challenges they will face.
The majority of students planning on going to college always have the same corresponding thoughts regarding decision making about their academic future. What career do I want to pursue? What are the most difficult or competitive areas of study? Which majors am I best suited for? The numerous options for majors in college and potential jobs to choose from can be overwhelming for students and difficult to determine on their own. AVID Career Day allows students to hear from multiple adults with experience in distinct professions they’ve utilized in their lifetime. This supports students in determining which career paths they are interested in taking.
In addition to students receiving valuable advice and information about different careers, AVID Career Day gives students a chance to interact with adults on a deeper level which builds students social skills which are necessary in all components of life.
“I think one of the best parts about Career Day is practicing talking to adults. That to me [is] one of the biggest benefits of Career Day is just getting them more exposure to a professional format and talking to people in a professional setting,” Cherniawski said.
AVID Career Day grants students the chance to build social skills with adults to prepare in advance for future professional settings requiring immense communication. This includes job interviews, conversing with professors and peers, and more.
The benefits of AVID Career Day goes beyond college and career assistance by allowing students to discuss with adults all aspects of life skills needed to achieve success within themselves and their environment.
