Many students and adults in the building have a lot of opinions about the iPhone pouch situation. Many students at Hayfield have a negative opinion about the phone pouches but adults, on the other hand, have a positive one.
Charlotte Winkleman is a freshman at Hayfield, and she has a negative opinion on the pouches.
“I think I understand the reasoning behind it, but, personally, I think I wouldn’t really be a fan about the rule,” Winklemen said.
Another student Layla Walker, who is also a freshman, had a point to her reasoning on why she thinks that we shouldn’t have the iPhone pouch rule.
“…if we ever need our phone or in case of an emergency, we can’t contact anybody because the phones will be locked up,” Walker said.
Many students think that the pouches will be a bad idea for the same reasons as the question of safety. However, these adults at Hayfield have an opposing opinion about the pouches.
Enrique Fernandez had an explanation that he thinks we should have them because kids always use their phones at school and a lot of other reasons why.
“If there are emergencies, there will be the adults right, they will be the ones who will be taking care of those emergencies. I don’t think it’s a bad idea- something to try, right?” Fernandez said.
Fernadez believes that, in the case of an emergency, the issue of student protection is not compromised in the absence of phone usage.
“Every classroom has a phone, teachers still have their phones, and the admin has their radios. Officer Grace has a radio as well as Dr. Abram. They have radios with the Fairfax County Police Department, right? So we have all the precautions in case right? And I can tell you that the schools in the area have done it, and they have seen success. You can see that the students at Robinson are more engaged and attentive in class because they don’t have their phones,” Fernandez said.
Fernandez also said he doesn’t get to choose if it becomes a rule this is all what he thinks and his input about the potential situation next year here at Hayfield Secondary School
Carmen Lofton-Johnson believes that there are pros and cons to having pouches.
“I think [the pouches are] fine. I have used them at concerts. They’re very safe…I think it cuts down on being distracted in class for sure,” Loften-Johnson said.
Loften-Johnson goes on to mention that they have already implemented this rule in other schools.
“I mean I haven’t heard from any other schools.I haven’t heard a lot of issues so that’s something that they had paloting this year and they will fix one of the issues for next year so I think next year all the schools will have it,” Loften-Johnson said.
These administrators had a perspective about the pouches rule, and they might implement it in the next school year. They all had an idea that we should have the iPhone pouches in the next school year unlike the students who think that we shouldn’t have this new school rule that we might have next year.
