Principal Darin Thompson officially departs from Hayfield on Sept. 12 to work within FCPS as a Senior Administrator of Nontraditional Public School Programs. Thompson’s role will focus on supporting the development and implementation of long-range plans for specialized schools and programs designed for kindergarten through adult levels. Upon his departure, FCPS will begin a nationwide search for the next principal.

After 2 years of leadership at Hayfield, Thompson has become an important piece of the hawk community.
“I want to be remembered as someone who championed our mission of ensuring success for all students,” Thompson said. “I will share that in all of my years of experience in education, I can recognize when I am a part of a truly special learning community, and Hayfield is indeed it!”
As Thompson goes onto work into a more specialized field of FCPS, Hayfield is left with dozens of Thompson-coined mantras and memories of football games and megaphones alike. Thompson’s biggest takeaway message of all: “Keep striving for excellence in all that you do.”
Even though Thompson will no longer be around to deliver his morning words of unity through the daily announcements, his words remain true: One love, one family, Hawks- we are one.
Editor’s note: This article has been updated on 9/12 to announce that the interim principal will be Deirdre M. Lavery. Lavery’s first day at Hayfield will be on Sept. 16. On Sept. 15, there will be a meet and greet at 2:55 p.m. to welcome Lavery.
