2023 NBA All-Star Weekend Review

The NBA All Star Weekend is a series of events that occur every year at about the halfway point of the NBA season. The weekend consists of the Celebrity All-Star Game, the Rising Stars Challenge, the Skills Challenge, the 3 Point Contest, the Dunk Contest, and the NBA All-Star Game. The fans, media, and players all vote on who they think are the best players to partake in the events. Although I enjoyed watching the NBA All Star weekend this year, I feel that something needs to change. The number of viewers along with the ratings were the lowest since 2000. The NBA also has the least amount of viewers on all star weekend compared to the NFL and MLB. This might be because the fans are tired of watching the same events every year. Many are saying the dunk contest has reached its peak because every dunk you can think of has been done before. Not to mention the actual All-Star Game has little to no defense every year. The players walk up and down the court and it’s not very entertaining to watch. Late in the 3rd quarter Boston Celtics players, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, (on separate teams for the event) went back and forth in a 1 on 1 style matchup. The fans loved it and many believed it was the best part of the game. That’s why I think a 1 on 1 tournament would be a perfect addition to the festivities. The players would be able to show off different moves they normally wouldn’t pull off in a real game and I think the fans would really enjoy it.
