Looking back on Hayfield’s 2025-2026 basketball season, the girls varsity basketball team was able to win us the National District Championship game, with a whooping score of 60-43 against the Edison Eagles. Additionally, they were able to achieve a 12-game winning streak, dominating each team they were put up against. In total, they only lost 3 of 28 games.
With these outstanding scores, it is hard not to ask yourself how it was accomplished. Was it pure skill? Was it chemistry?
“I believe that our team had a lot of chemistry this season. I think the reason we made it so far was a mixture of skill and chemistry,” power forward Marcella Oboite said.
Chemistry within a team is important. It allows for relationships between players that run deeper than just basketball, but can still be presented on the court in a positive way.
“Our team did have a lot of chemistry,” point guard Mariah Overton said. “It was really like a sisterhood.”
The team prepared for each game carefully. They took time to get themselves in a game-ready mindset and refresh their skills. However, they also tried their best to never miss an opportunity in supporting their junior varsity and freshman teams.
“Before each game, I would get shots up and listen to pregame music, while also supporting our JV and freshman teams,” Overton said.
Supporting the other teams is important, especially considering that one day, those same kids will be in the same position the varsity girls are in now. Cheering them on can allow them to feel more confident and prideful in their skills, allowing them to play to their full potential.
Each girl on the varsity basketball team has a different story, as everyone does, but what brought them together is their passion for the sport. Most seem to have played for almost their whole lives, meaning, they’ve never known what it’s like to not play and don’t want to.
“I’ve been playing basketball for 12 years now,” Overton said.
This 2025-2026 basketball season showed us how hard the girls worked, and with even more practice, how capable they are of winning regionals next season. With a mix of both chemistry and skill and with what they learned from the seniors on the team, they will be driven to success.
“I am planning on playing basketball next year, and I am very excited for the season,” Oboite said.
