“Retirement feels like the perfect balance: having the freedom to enjoy life at a slower pace while still staying connected to teaching in a meaningful way,” English teacher Kristine Long said.
Long has been a teacher for 31 years and a proud Hayfield Hawk for 25. Long is leaving Hayfield after this school year but plans to continue teaching English courses at Northern Virginia Community College.
Long’s legacy as an English teacher at Hayfield is a descriptor that encapsulates an array of courses: Dual Enrollment English 12, DE English 12 online, Film Study, and Honors level classes. This versatility combined with years of experience has allowed Long to hone in on what works over time, combining student interest with the application of literature.
“One year, after reading the play ‘Waiting for Godot,’ a student proclaimed that he hated the play while another student said it was perfect,” Long said. “Knowing that I helped students discover enjoyment in reading was one of the most meaningful parts of my career.”
Long’s focus on impact is the guiding principle that she carries with her throughout her years of teaching. It is evident in her relationships with her colleagues, students, and career.
“More than anything, I hope to be remembered as someone who was dedicated to her students, committed to her profession, and genuinely cared about making a positive difference,” Long said.
